Hi.

When recording a movie, why will my VP8870-640 HD only record to a maximum of 2045mb, then start recording again. It records the entire time it is set for but does it in 2 parts.

ALSO when recording a second program it records sound only & no picture. Futhermore a 3rd recording is ok with picture & sound??? With more playing I found every 2nd recording has a blank picture.

Breakdown.

Rec 1- 2045mb & balance of time. All OK.
Rec 2 - 2045mb & balance of time BUT with no picture (sound ok)
Rec 3- 2045mb & balance of time. All OK.
Rec 4 - 2045mb & balance of time BUT with no picture (sound ok)
And so on...

The instruction indicates the AV/OUT socket to play videos. Difficult when there isn't an AV/OUT socket!
I struggled comprehending the notion that the video out is the earphone socket. I would have thought that the AV/IN socket would work wichever way the device was operating at the time.Works fine once I checked this forum.

Otherwise I love this gadget. I show it off everwhere I go. Better than using a laptop & external HD for backup & storage.

Just need a mini projector to complement it. That would be cool!!

Hi.

I attach the AV cables to video out on our sky decoder and check for a picture & sound on the VP8870. Then set the sky decoder to the channel/s & time/s that I wish to record and then go to the scheduling part in the VP8870 and set up the times/s to record the programmes.

Every 2nd recording - sound but no picture.

In the meantime to over come the problem, I have been setting the device to record for 1 minute between the actual recordings that I am wanting. This seems the fool the device and I can just delete the 1min sections that have a blank screen & I get the result that I want.

Also It won’t read a 1GB SD card from the SD slot. A 128MB card works OK??

Again I can fool the device by attaching the Host USB cable to the USB/MINI USB and plug it into a card reader & it will read the 1GB card. All other 1GB cards I use (CF & XD) work ok in the devices slots??

I set an extended recording time overnight of about 5 hours. It recorded both sound & picture on 4 sections. 3 at 2045MB and a smaller part. Not 1 continual recording.

Dear kaiojim,

We've been testing pre-recording about 1.5hour,and interval about 30minutes and continue recording again(This process has been repeaded 4~5 times) . After all of this and then play the recording video, it works fine so please make sure your video source.

Q : Also It won’t read a 1GB SD card from the SD slot. A 128MB card works OK??

A : Did you find the same issue with the other SD card?Could you help us to try another SD card?

I haven't yet tried another SD card. I will post a result as soon as I can get a card to try.

I have tried video outputs from other components and get the same result. I'm not too concerned, as it doesn’t take much effort to select the second part of a movie and set it playing. A bit annoying but I’ll cope.

Cheers Jim

it sounds suspiciously like your hard drive is formatted to fat32 which would allow 2GB files max. is it?

edit: i just checked, the vp8870 only works with FAT32 which should support 4GB files. FAT16 does 2GB files. Maybe they're being careful and splitting it at 2GB.
